Bearded Dragon Tank Setup Ideas

There are many bearded dragon tank set-ups to choose from, all of which have unique pros and cons.

But to be the best pet owner, you need the enclosure to be large enough, have the proper internal climate, and have decor that mimics their natural habitat.

Terrarium Size for Bearded Dragons

The size of the terrarium is the first and most important step to ensure the happiness of a bearded dragon. They’re active reptiles that enjoy exploring and climbing.

Most adult bearded dragons require a terrarium that is at least 75 gallons in volume. However, since they’re active reptiles, the ideal bearded dragon cage is around 120 gallons.

Depending on your space, a 120-gallon enclosure may not be possible. If so, try to stay in this size range to offer your dragon the space it needs.

Terrarium Lighting

Ambient light and basking light are the two primary requirements for lighting up your dragon’s enclosure.

The ambient lighting illuminates the enclosure and mimics natural sunlight. To do this effectively, you’ll need a full spectrum light fixture that emits both UVA and UVB rays.

The bulb should span all or most of the distance of the terrarium so it illuminates the entire habitat.

UVA and UVB rays (which bearded dragons receive naturally in the wild) are essential for regulating normal behaviors and preventing skin and bone diseases.

The second important fixture is the basking light, which provides heat to your pet.

Heat lamps help your dragon regulate its internal body temperature since their cold-blooded bodies can’t do it alone.

Temperatures

Since bearded dragons are typically desert dwellers, you need to replicate that heat in the terrarium:

  • Hot side at around 95°F
  • Cooler side at around 85°F.
  • Nighttime ambient temperature at around 70°F

As you decrease the temperature at night, you should also turn off the lights in the enclosure. This allows your bearded dragon to follow a natural day-night schedule and it won’t disrupt their sleep cycle.

If the light is on all day and night, your dragon will experience restlessness, stress, and other health issues.

Bearded Dragon Habitat and Care

Substrate or Flooring

There are a variety of substrates you can choose for your bearded dragon cage. Here are two of the most common non-particle substrates in bearded dragon terrariums:

  • Terrarium Sand allows your dragon to burrow into it and maintains heat well, which makes it easier to maintain the proper humidity.
  • Reptile Bark maintains humidity with natural bark made from fir trees. The bark also absorbs and releases moisture to create the humidity that beardies need.

Bearded Dragon Furniture

Furniture like logs, large rocks, and other elevated surfaces offer bearded dragons mental and physical stimulation.

Other decor like caves and hides are also important, as beardies typically like to relax and sleep in darker, cooler areas.

Bearded Dragon Diet

In general, bearded dragons are omnivorous, meaning they eat both plant- and animal-based foods, including insects.

As a baseline to follow, a bearded dragon’s diet should be about half plant-based material and half animal-based material.

Water

Since many bearded dragons are desert dwellers, bearded dragons get the majority of their water from the foods they eat.

The best foods to keep your pet hydrated are dark leafy greens and fruit. Also, using a gentle spray bottle, you can spray water on your dragon to keep their skin hydrated.

If you include a water bowl, ensure it’s shallow and is only in the cage for a few hours at most. Any longer and you risk changing the humidity levels in the cage.

Safely Bringing Your Pet Home

Once the enclosure is assembled and furnished, it’s ready for your beardie!

But now, you must understand the do’s and don’ts of bringing your pet home.

Keep Their Cage Covered While Traveling

Most reptiles travel best if they can’t see where they’re going. If you place a clear cage in your car, your pet can see its surroundings, causing it a lot of stress.

Instead of using small transport cages, try a cloth bag or Styrofoam box. This is the safest way to transport your pet to his cozy bearded dragon terrarium.

Get Your Pet Home as Quickly as Possible

Get your bearded dragon home and settled into its terrarium as quickly as possible.

Avoid running errands or stopping by the store as prolonged time in the car can cause a lot of stress and discomfort. This is especially true if it becomes too hot or cold in your vehicle.

Prepare the Terrarium Before You Get Your Pet

This is a very important step in the process.

Try to have the temperature in your terrarium already heated. This way, your beardie won’t be cold waiting for the habitat to warm up.

Also, make sure that the decor and equipment are in place. Putting your dragon in the enclosure and then modifying the environment will stress them out and take longer for them to get acclimated.
